The Data: What AI Writing Has Actually Changed

Most online discussion of AI writing is “feelings” and “opinions”. This one is different: from the anonymized data of over ten thousand active users on the Maliang Writer platform, we distilled a set of hard numbers so you can see the real effect of AI-assisted writing.

Data collection period: December 2025 to February 2026, a sample of 4,200+ active creators.

Efficiency data overview

Daily Output: From 3,000 to 12,000 Characters

The median daily output of traditional handwriting authors is 3,200 characters. With Maliang Writer’s AI assistance, the median daily output rose to 12,800 characters, an increase of about 300%.

There is an interesting distribution here: not everyone uses AI to “pile up word count”. About 35% of users produce about the same per day as before (3,000–5,000 characters), but spend the saved time revising and polishing repeatedly for quality. The other 65% chose to raise output.

Key finding: the core value of AI writing is not just “faster”, but the freedom of choice it gives you: you can choose more output, or higher quality.

Completion Rate: Abandonment Rate Down from 78% to 31%

There is a harsh statistic in the web-novel world: the abandonment rate of traditional writers is as high as 78% (defined as dropping a serial after starting it and passing 100,000 characters).

Among Maliang Writer users, this figure fell to 31%. The reasons are direct:

  • The three-level outline keeps the direction clear at all times, so you won’t get lost at 300,000 characters
  • AI helps you through “inspiration droughts”, so you don’t abandon a book because of writer’s block
  • The knowledge graph tracks foreshadowing and settings automatically, so late in the book you won’t quit because “the holes can’t be filled”

31% is still not low, but compared with 78% it is a huge improvement. The main reasons for the remaining abandonment are “wrong genre choice” (42%) and “no time to update for real-life reasons” (35%), which AI can’t solve.

Completion rate comparison

Setting Consistency: Contradiction Rate Down 72%

We had the editorial team randomly sample 200 long novels over 300,000 characters and count how often “obvious setting contradictions” appeared.

  • Group without AI assistance: an average of 4.7 obvious contradictions per 100,000 characters (character setting conflicts, timeline errors, dead characters coming back to life, and so on)
  • Maliang Writer user group: an average of 1.3 per 100,000 characters

A drop of about 72%. The remaining 1.3 contradictions come mainly from cases where “users edited chapter content by hand but didn’t update the knowledge graph”; the system is already improving its automatic detection.

Reader Feedback: No Obvious Difference in Subscription Data

This is a question many people care about: can readers tell AI wrote it?

We compared works of the same genre, on the same platform, listed at the same time. The AI-assisted group and the pure-handwriting group showed no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) on these metrics:

  • Average subscription conversion rate: AI group 4.2% vs handwriting group 4.5%
  • Average follow-read rate: AI group 61% vs handwriting group 63%
  • Average monthly tickets / recommendation votes: AI group slightly higher, but the difference is not significant

In other words, readers vote for the story, not for how it was written. As long as the story is good and updates are steady, how it was written doesn’t affect results.

Model Preferences: Claude 4.6 Takes Half

The distribution of generation models platform users choose most often:

  • Claude 4.6: 48%
  • Gemini 2.5 Pro: 22%
  • DeepSeek R1: 15%
  • GPT o3: 8%
  • Others: 7%

Claude 4.6 is popular mainly because its Chinese prose is the most fluent. Gemini 2.5 Pro’s advantage is its long context window (1 million tokens). DeepSeek R1 has attracted many entry-level users with its value for money.

Top 5 Features by Usage Frequency

Ranked by weekly active usage rate:

  1. Agent collaborative generation (92%): the core feature, used by almost everyone
  2. Three-level outline (78%): the skeleton of long-form writing; see the Three-Level Outline System
  3. Knowledge graph (65%): usage jumps once a long novel passes 100,000 characters
  4. Bestseller Imitation (51%): analyze a popular novel’s style, then create
  5. Character management (47%): building character files and relationship networks

The core difference for paid users is not “writing more” but “using the tools more deeply”:

  • Paid users use an average of 4.2 feature modules, free users an average of 1.8
  • Paid users’ knowledge graph usage rate is 3.2 times that of free users
  • Paid users lean toward Claude 4.6 (62%), while free users use DeepSeek R1 more (41%)

Our Takeaways

These numbers convince us of two things:

First, AI-assisted writing is already a usable productivity tool, not a toy. A 300% output increase, a 72% drop in contradictions, a 47-percentage-point drop in abandonment rate: these numbers are no accident.

Second, AI’s value is underrated. Most discussion is still at the stage of “can AI write”, but the real value is that it changes how creators work, giving you the ability to handle quality and efficiency together rather than choosing one.

FAQ

Q: Is there selection bias in this data?
Yes. Users of Maliang Writer are themselves more positive about AI writing, so these numbers represent “the group that actively adopts AI”, not all authors.

Q: Will the data be updated regularly?
We plan to publish it quarterly. The next edition is expected in June 2026.

Q: Can you provide more granular data?
We will publish genre-specific reports later (efficiency data for xuanhuan / romance / urban separately).
