Plan a long novel in three levels: master outline, volume outlines, chapter outlines. AI assists and builds only what you need, so long novels stay on track.
The Logic Behind the Three-Level Outline
The root cause of abandoned long novels is the author losing their sense of direction during writing: foreshadowing planted early can't be paid off, characters contradict themselves, and by the late stage the whole story turns out to have a basic structural flaw.
The three-level outline builds control from the top down:
Level 1: Master outline (blueprint for the whole book, 1,000–3,000 characters)
- Core conflict: the fundamental conflict between the protagonist and the final opponent
- Protagonist's growth arc: where they start and who they finally become
- Ending direction: the basic shape of the grand finale
Level 2: Volume outline (30,000–80,000 characters per volume, 500–1,000 characters of planning per volume)
- The volume's core events (2–3 major events)
- Changes in the protagonist's state (power level, relationships, inner life)
- Closing hook (leads readers on to the next volume)
Level 3: Chapter blueprint (a 500–800 character blueprint per chapter)
- Opening state (location, time, characters present)
- Plot beats (3–5 events)
- Closing hook (builds anticipation for the next chapter)
AI-Assisted Planning: Built as Needed, Not Sprawling

In Maliang Writer, you can start from a single idea and build the outline together with AI:
- Set the master outline first: core conflict, protagonist's growth arc, ending direction
- Then break it into volume outlines: each volume's goal, key events and closing hook
- Write chapter outlines as needed: only the next few chapters you're about to write; if earlier chapters have no outline, only those few get filled in
- Write the text from the chapter outline: the writer agent follows the chapter outline and doesn't spend later plot early
Planning levels you didn't ask for aren't built automatically, so you don't waste credits; when the scope is unclear, the AI asks you once first.
A chapter outline doesn't say effect words like “create suspense.” It spells out, scene by scene, who sees what, how they weigh it up and what they say; pacing is arranged in small cycles of about 5 chapters each.
Dynamic Outlines: Adjust Any Time While You Write
An outline is not a fixed contract but a living file that you manage dynamically.
Maliang Writer lets you change the outline at any point and provides an impact analysis:
- After you edit a volume outline, the AI tells you “this change affects the chapter blueprints of the next X chapters”
- Chapters whose blueprints need regenerating are marked automatically
- When continuing, chapter outlines and text are matched by chapter title, number and plot, and it warns you first when they're out of alignment
Common misconceptions:
- An outline doesn't need to be very detailed: draw the skeleton, and fill in the flesh while you write
- An outline can and should be adjusted at any time; the key is to update the plans for later chapters at the same time
- Writing a few chapters first and making the outline afterwards is the main reason novels get abandoned; we recommend planning before you write
